REVIEW: Carbon Neutral Company

You know how musicians always talk about their commitment to the earth, and how they all drive a Prius, and how they’re better than you? Well, here’s a band that has a reason to.

When Coldplay came out with their album X & Y, they decided to make it “carbon neutral”. The CarbonNeutral Company will calculate how much carbon dioxide is emitted by your business, your car, your flights, your flatulent dog… pretty much everything. Then they give you tips on how to bring your CO2 emissions down.

In Coldplay’s case, it was their album. With the help of CarbonNeutral, they are supporting a forest in Chiapas, Mexico by investing in a project that “enables farmers to plant fruit and nut tree orchards on their land, restoring it to its original forested state”. And if you’re not some band from Scotland with tons of cash to throw around at North American forests? Here’s a way to make a difference. CarbonNeutral has developed a program where a celebrity can sponsor a reforestation project, and anyone can pay £10 to £18 (sorry, no conversions here, math and I are enemies) to dedicate a tree in one of these forests.

While this seems a bit like one of those name-a-star programs — and yes, there IS a Kerry Barklow star somewhere in the universe, thank you very much — I like the idea of giving a name to some random tree in some random country for some random celebrity. For example, it would just entertain me for days if I knew I had a tree in a forest supported by a band called Super Furry Animals. I ask, does the forest have super furry animals in it?

Now that sounds like a good cause.
