“Going Green”: Did Vogue Get it Right?

Another day, another cursed bout of yoga/torture. As I lay on my mat, during my favorite pose at the end of the class that I like to call “Nap Time”, my mind traveled back to an article I read recently in Vogue.

The article, “Going Green” on page 321, discusses organic beauty products in today’s market. I was ready for a superficial article, one that seemed to be riding the organic trend instead of actually having something to say. I was pleasantly surprised, and I enjoyed the writing so much that I read the entire thing, something that’s not easy to do when you’re being bombarded by images of Paris Hilton selling her new fragrance, guaranteed to make your I.Q. drop several points on sight.

I thought that the author, Christine Lennon, portrayed the path to stocking your bathroom with organic products with humor and honesty. She admitted that she used to hate natural toothpaste because it was chalky, and proceeds to give credit to products and companies who have gone so far beyond what organic health and beauty products used to be. She includes comments from John Masters of John Masters Organics and Joshua Onysko of Pangea Organics, calling the latter “a slickly packaged, affordable, and altogether impressive ‘ecocentric body-care’ company.” See? I’m not the only woman obsessed with Pangea.

I can’t say for sure what the products shown beside the article are like, but it’s apparent that Vogue tried. You can’t take it too seriously, though, since the beauty products on the pages surrounding the article are chock-full of nasty chemicals, Paris Hilton’s afore-mentioned mind-numbingly unnecessary fragrance, for example.

Still, I say, the more, the merrier. For every good organic product that gets a mention, there is one less conventional product in the magazine. The more people talk about what’s really in the products we spray, rub, and buff into our skin every day, the more aware consumers become. And anywhere in the world, every time there is a sale of Paris Hilton’s new perfume… A kitten dies.
