SUSTAINABILITY WEEK

I’ve been asked many times, what is sustainability? Wikipedia says that sustainability is “an attempt to provide the best outcomes for the human and natural environments both now and into the indefinite future… Sustainability affects every level of organization, from the local neighborhood to the entire planet.”

Well, that pretty much covers it. But the term “sustainable” has been showing up everywhere lately. I recently typed the word into Google, and the results were vast. A majority of the pages were about agriculture and development. Quite a few of them grabbed on to the general concept of “sustainable”, each of them defining and explaining it in slightly different ways. “Sustainable”, while definable at first glance, seems to be one of those words that takes on a life of its own, achieving an array of complex and intricate meanings depending on the context in which it is used.

Due to the spacious nature of the word “sustainable”, I’ve decided to spend one week describing what it means to me, and to this site. Don’t worry, I won’t be sappy or overly philosophical about it. I really just want to spend some time sorting through my thoughts about the word. I’ll be posting something every day, mostly because I feel like I should be thorough.

This is the perfect week for any of you to send me your thoughts, ideas, or hatemail. Where is all the hatemail? I was warned that when I started this blog people would send me hatemail when they disagreed with me, and so far, nil. Look alive, people!
