Giving Conscious Gifts: TOTALLY Sustainable

in REVIEWS: Stores & Shopping

Since my Sustainability Week just happens to fall in the week before Christmas, I feel like I should say something about gifts. While it’s true that Christmas has turned into a full-fledged ConsumerFest, we can at least buy presents for our friends and family that do a little more than your average TickleMeElmo. Here are a handful of cool things for everyone on your (last-minute) list.

FOR A WOMAN:

Club Fife SF

Give the woman in your life a subscription for underwear. Yup, underwear. In case you’re not female, you must understand that a comfy pair of knickers is worth its weight in gold, especially those from Club Fife in San Francisco. Made from modal, a material made from beech wood chips that’s WAY softer than it sounds, these underpants come in boyshort or low-rise thong form. The only problem is, you’d better know the woman you’re giving them to pretty damn well, especially since you need to know what size undies she wears.

FOR A MAN OR WOMAN:

Toms Shoes

In case you haven’t heard of Tom’s Shoes yet, here’s the basic shpiel: Buy a pair of Tom’s Shoes, and a poor kid in Argentina gets a pair. Also, you (or whomever you’re giving the shoes to) gets to look like an L.A. hipster. That could be either a pro or a con, depending on your perspective.

FOR A MAN:

Typewriter Cufflinks

What do you get for the guy who’s got everything? Personalized typewriter cufflinks. I can almost guarantee he doesn’t have them. Now, the question is, does he have a shirt with French cuffs?

FOR THE DORM-DWELLING COLLEGE STUDENT:

Recycled Flip-Flop Doormat

These durable doormats from Wet Sand Surf Shop will be a dorm favorite. It’s a doormat, and it’s made of recycled flip-flops. What’s not to love? You can also get a less Techni-Color version over at Uncommon Goods.

FOR THE HOME:

Juicy Clocks

Aren’t these clocks from Uncommon Goods yummy to look at? They’re also made from post-consumer recycled detergent bottles, which ups the green factor. I guess they’re kind of girly, but I’m sure you know someone who would appreciate one in either orange, lemon, or lime.

ALSO FOR THE HOME:

Organic Fiore Reverse Print Quilt

The Organic Fiore Reverse-Print Quilt from Gaiam is as festive as it is beautiful. The quilt is stuffed with undyed, unbleached cotton. It’s the perfect gift for someone who likes to sit in a big comfy chair drinking hot cocoa.

FOR THE DOG:

CoolaRoo Pet Bed

The Coolaroo Pet Bed from Gaiam is something I know our dogs would appreciate in the warmer months, especially our greyhound Maggie who can never seem to cool off when the mercury rises. It would be nice to put a soft dog blanket on it for winter, making a little sleeping platform. It’s made from a knitted fabric that you can wash down with a hose, which is why I covet it.

FOR A WORKAHOLIC:

Vivavi Overlay Tray

This beautiful tray from Vivavi, made with formaldehyde-free adhesives, would be perfect for a blogger. Maybe you didn’t hear me. This tray, it’s PERFECT FOR A BLOGGER. Consider yourselves hinted.
