REVIEW: Starbucks Organic Milk (Finally)

In December I expounded upon the frustrations of ordering, or attempting to order, organic milk at a Starbucks. This has been my experience at nearly every Starbucks I enter, and my husband and I are in pursuit of The Perfect Starbucks, when we walk in and order organic milk and nobody looks at us like we’re insane. Our pursuit has taken us far and wide, and we’ve drunk many a latté along the way.

And now, we’ve found it.

The location of The Perfect Starbucks.

Or, I should say, my husband, his brother Chris, and my future brother-in-law Kevin found it. They were in San Francisco for MacWorld (nerds!) and went into the Starbucks in their parking garage. I’ve decided not to focus on the fact that there was a Starbucks in their parking garage, mainly because if The Perfect Starbucks had ended up being in a morgue we’d still have gone there anyway, so I’m just thankful it’s only in a parking garage.

Anyway, they walked into this Starbucks, and when Ted got to the counter he asked if they had organic milk. And, the Starbucks employee simply said, “Yes.” And then there was silence. Beautiful, wonderful silence, signaling that there would be no fumbling, no asking everyone who worked there if they were out of organic milk. Just sheer silence.

Sadly, I was not there to witness it. I would have loved to see the look on Ted’s face, though I’m sure I would have been decently shocked myself. You see, Ted and I have had all sorts of fiascos ordering organic milk at Starbucks. Our favorite one was when we were in Orange County visiting my parents, and we stopped for a couple of hot chocolates after a visit with my sister. When we asked about the elusive milk, the girl behind the counter looked at us, head turned sideways, and said, “But, NOBODY drinks organic milk.”

Really. Because WE JUST ORDERED IT. One would infer from such a request that, indeed, we choose to drink organic milk of our own free will. Maybe more people would drink organic milk at Starbucks if they actually carried it in their stores on a regular basis, and if it wasn’t so embarrassing to order it.

This is exactly why we are so amazed that The Perfect Starbucks didn’t raise any issues when Ted ordered organic milk. And, it’s so close! It’s just an hour’s drive away! We’re probably not going to drive there just for a latté, but still, IT EXISTS. That’s enough to make it worth the excruciating frustration we endure at all the other Starbucks we enter. Now, we’ll always know that, somewhere south of Market in San Francisco, people are ordering organic milk at a Starbucks there, and the only word they hear is “yes”.

Did you know that Starbucks is required to make Estima, their fair trade blend, if you request it? Even if it’s not their coffee of the day?

Usually, this means waiting a bit for them to french press a cup for you, but I’ve never had a problem with this (although others have).

Happy future milk adventures :)
