On the first day of our trip Ted and I got out of bed at an ungodly hour and went to stand in the security line at Oakland International. In case you haven’t been there, this airport is a breeding ground for Type-A personalities, people who just can’t help themselves when an opportunity arises to somehow better their own situation, without regard to the inconvenience to those around them. Now, I’m a Taurus. Though I’ve never given much stock to the whole astrology thing, I’d be the first to admit to having a temper. Ted and I call it “The Bull Horns”, because when I’m angry or frustrated, I stomp and snort around for a while, impaling those who get too close.I realized this morning why the pushing and prodding of the East Bay Type-A’s in the airport security line makes me see red: It’s just like a cattle run. It’s guaranteed to bring out the stampede instinct in anyone, let alone those of us who already have the symbolic bull rings through our nostrils.I did eventually get through the line at the airport safely, as did everyone else. But it wasn’t pretty. At least I’d had my morning coffee, because the only thing worse than a huffing-and-puffing angry bull is that same bull, sans caffeine.Once we were on the plane, there were the usual announcements by the flight attendants. These can be annoying, so we normally just tune them out. Today, however, was gloriously different. While running through the list of available snack items, the woman threw this in:”And today, we have the Snickerdoodle Mega Cookie Bite for five dollars.” Wait, did she mean the Mega Bite Snickerdoodle Cookie that’s a QUARTER-POUNDER? For crap’s sake, why don’t they just start hooking passengers up to an IV drip of liquified Big Macs? Airline food is always bad news, and Ted and I were thankful we had thought to pack some trail mix to hold us over.
The hotel where we stayed our first nightAfter the flight, we arrived in Costa Rica in the evening. Our hotel was fairly comfortable, which was exciting because we weren’t sure what to expect. We were so excited to get going that we could hardly contain ourselves, though the activities wouldn’t begin until the next day. We went to bed that night with visions of coffee beans and Costa Ricans dancing in our heads. More tomorrow.
