REVIEW: Produce Prices in Death Valley

Last weekend Ted and I were on a road trip, and we scheduled a brief visit to Death Valley National Park. We stayed on the north side of the park, and in the morning we ate at the lodge’s restaurant. As we scanned the menu, we noticed that the side of fruit was listed for nearly $12. The guy taking our order pointed out to us that anything perishable was more expensive in Death Valley due to the high costs of trucking in such items. This made sense, and it made me think about how accessible everything is to us where we live.

I live in Sonoma County, and I have an amazing selection of fresh organic produce at my fingertips. I can’t imagine how much more difficult my lifestyle would be if I couldn’t, say, juice some carrots, or nosh on an apple whenever I wanted to. I have a new appreciation for those of you who may not have great produce readily available.

Wherever you live, staying on the path to health is difficult, and the temptations are many. However, if produce and other organic items are a long drive away, or if you have to pay a small fortune in shipping charges to get the food you want, your quest is even more challenging. I commend you for the effort you make to live a healthy life.
