I’ve been thinking a lot lately about animal welfare in today’s society. I’m not a vegetarian, and I recently committed to eating meat only if I can make sure I know exactly where it’s coming from and how it was raised. I’m realizing how difficult this is in a practical sense, because it affects everything we do – going out to eat, eating at a friend’s house, and so forth. However, Ted has really inspired me to be more consistent about what I believe. It’s just so easy to go out for a burger, but “easy” isn’t what striving for sustainability is all about.
Still, there are ways to make being an “ethicalitarian” work. And honestly, if I really think about it, this is really just another good reason to cook at home more often, ensuring that we know EXACTLY where everything in our meals is coming from. Sure, it would be fantastic if every restaurant we loved served organic free-range chicken and hormone-free milk, but that’s just not the case. By eating at home most of the time, we’re able to avoid being hypocritical while simultaneously supporting the farmers and companies we love. To me, that’s the best of all worlds.
Let me know what you think about eating animals in today’s world of corporate farming. How do you deal with this topic when you eat out? Are you a vegetarian or a meat-eater, and why? I’m going to collect my responses and publish them in a later post, so if you take part, YOU, dear reader, could be featured on THE INTERNETS!
