Like Kerry, I cannot deny that Kiehl’s products work well. I once used several, but I’ve painfully let them slip through my fingertips (well, except for the Supremely Gentle Eye Make-Up Remover). One of the products to which I did say bye-bye was the Creamy Eye Treatment With Avocado. I can now wipe my tears because avocado has been replaced with Burt’s Bees Radiance Eye Creme (which is also cheaper).I’m a longtime fan of Burt’s Bees because when all else fails, you can usually find a safe, natural product sporting their label. And now they’ve made a commitment to strive towards 100% natural ingredients in each and every one of their products. In the meantime, Burt’s Bees items are 99% natural on average with half being 100% natural which is not bad at all; and they are setting the natural standard with excellent principles.
Now, I am not against wrinkles entirely. I rather like laugh lines around my eyes because I like to laugh. And I will take wrinkles over the extraterrestrial look of too much plastic surgery any day. I honestly think an elegant, aged woman is beautiful. However, I do want to take care of my skin so that my fine lines don’t get out of control while I’m only in my 30’s. That said, a good eye cream is important to me and since the day I picked up Burt’s Bees Radiance Eye Creme at Whole Foods, I’ve not been disappointed. The texture is very light and as I gently smooth it under my eyes and on those laugh lines, it soaks into my skin quickly. The creme also seems to brighten my eyes on the spot and give them a lift! This eye creme receives a “99.02 Natural” stamp from Burt and the ingredient list is full of natural benefits that as far as I know, are OK for my skin to drink: water, sesame seed oil, vegetable glycerin, castor oil, stearic acid (vegetable fat), kaolin, glucose (sugar), royal jelly powder, comfrey leaf extract, cucumber extract, eyebright extract, chamomile extract, rosehips extract, witch hazel extract, lecithin, mica, sodium borate (natural borax), xanthan gum (natural thickener), orange oil, lemon oil, ylang ylang oil, sucrose stearate & distearate (sugar emulsifiers), fragrance, glucose oxidase & lactoperoxidase (natural preservative). Also like Kerry, the term “fragrance” concerns me, but Burt’s Bees’ ingredients glossary says it is “The particular aromatic blend of essential oils added to our fragranced product, making it more appealing to the consumer.” I still don’t know that that means exactly, but essential oils is preferable to me over Kiehl’s chemical litany of ingredients. Not to be cheeky, but whatever the fragrance is smells lovely - very clean and calming. As for any of the other Radiance Eye Creme ingredients that give you pause, you can look each of them up in the ingredients glossary as well as Skin Deep.Radiance Eye Creme is not in Skin Deep’s database and I confess I haven’t looked up each ingredient individually yet, but I did peruse Burt’s ingredients glossary with satisfaction. The highlights:1. Highly nourishing royal jelly powder - replete with nectar, pollen, flower parts, vitamins, and minerals. It’s a very precious substance made by honeybees and fed to a few select, young bees who grow up to be mature and fertile queen bees, outliving their companions 40 times over.2. Comfrey - “contains allantoin, a cell proliferant, which stimulates new cell growth and increases cell production therefore supporting more rapid healing. Comfrey aids in soothing inflammation, burns, wounds, swelling and bites.”3. & 4. The very calming, soothing and anti-puffing agents of chamomile and cucumber.5. Eyebright - “Euphrasia Officinalis. This plant has been used for centuries as a topical application for eye irritations. It has a toning effect on the surface of the eye and has excellent astringent and anti-inflammatory properties to aid problems due to allergic reactions, airborne pollution and conjunctivitis. Eyebright is known to give brilliance and sparkle to the eyes.”6. Rosehip - excellent for dry, mature, and aging skin.7. Mica - “diffuses light to hide fine lines.” Ah, that must be the instantaneous brightening effect!8. Lastly, we have ylang ylang which I believe aids the mysterious “fragrance” in making this eye creme smell divine. All in all, I’m quite pleased with Burt’s Bees Radiance Eye Creme as well as the goals to further improve their already fantastic items. They also offer two other Radiance products - a day and night creme. I’m thinking I should add those to my shopping list, especially the night creme.
