REVIEW: Grainaissance Amazake

If you’re like me, sometimes you get busy. Too busy. So busy, in fact, that you can barely find time for a shower, let alone remembering to feed yourself. But I’ve never been someone who goes for those “meal replacement” bars, which should instead be labeled “fun replacement.” Rather than suffer through yucky bars when I’m running around during the day, I drink amazake from Grainaissance.

So, what is amazake, exactly? Here’s the description on Grainaissance’s website:

Grainaissance Amazake is a delicious dairy-free shake made from 100% organic whole grain brown rice… Koji (cultured rice) is added to the cooled whole grain rice causing enzymes to break down the carbohydrates into simpler sugars (not refined). As the mixture incubates, the natural sweetness develops, creating a nectar-like beverage.

“Nectar-like beverage” indeed. The company makes various flavors of amazake by adding almonds and things like cocoa and banana purée. My favorite flavor is Cool Coconut, which is rich and creamy with a subtle coconut taste, a result of the creamed coconut they add to the beverage. If coconut isn’t your thing, another great flavor is Chocolate Almond.

Try a bottle of Grainaissance Amazake for those days when you just can’t find the time to make yourself a proper lunch. It’s really filling, and the fermented grains and almonds provide energy that will last all afternoon. Plus, it’s amazingly delicious. How can you go wrong?
