I’ll admit to not shaving my legs every day, mostly because I have sensitive skin. But I do shave often, contrary to what some might think of natural gals like me. I used a Gillette Sensor Excel for a few years, but when the turquoise handle became covered in soap scum like snow, I started to shop around for a more sustainable replacement. Preserve razors kept catching my eye at Whole Foods, so I researched Recycline, the company that produces Preserve razors and other products.
Before I even tried a razor on my legs, I swooned over Recycline’s principles. Take the razor I selected, the Preserve Razor Triple, for instance. The handle is made from 100% recycled plastic which includes 65% recycled Stonyfield Farm yogurt cups. Preserve’s "one-piece handle design reduces resources consumed in manufacturing." And very important to myself and other animal-lovers, Recycline does not perform animal testing for any of their products. If you read this page, you’ll see that most of their products - adult toothbrushes, children’s toothbrushes, tongue cleaners, and tableware - are created using the same recycling principles. That page also mentions Recycline’s partnership with Stonyfield Farm in 2000 to use their recycled yogurt cups for Preserve products. Stonyfield’s yogurt cups are made of #5 plastic which is not recyclable in some areas such as my neighborhood. But I read at at the very end of this page that I can return my clean yogurt cups and lids to Stonyfield farm and they will recycle ‘em for me! Recycline also freely gives postage-paid labels and envelopes so that you can return any of their products including the plastic boxes; they will recycle all returned items into other razors and such.
Now for the actual razor, the Preserve Triple Razor works like a charm! The ergonomic handle is sleek and thin, and the ridges on the handle make it very easy to grip in a wet shower. The triple blade itself actually does give a close, smooth shave and I haven’t nicked my legs yet. This might be crossing the line of T.M.I., but it also works well on my armpits - very delicate skin. There are two Preserve Triple Razor blade cartridges included in each package and refills are easily found at Whole Foods or Recycline’s online store. The other cool thing is the plastic box also doubles as a storage case, very ideal for traveling. And last but not least, you have an array of rainbow colors to pick from which varies from store to store based on availability. I chose cobalt blue because I drool over every shade of blue in God’s creation. Since this razor is quite unisex, choosing a color helps to make it more girly or manly, respectively.
So if you can’t tell, I love the Preserve Triple Razor. I also love how Recycline avoids needless waste and makes it so easy to recycle their products. If The Sustainable Scoop allotted stars to reviews, I’d be checking off five stars for this razor!
