Jenni is taking the week off, so to keep you entertained for the day, here’s a video from Plenty Magazine about Terracycle, the company that makes liquid fertilizer from worm poop. Try to ignore the miserable shot angles, leaving CEO Tom Szaky’s face in profile for most of the interview, and focus instead on the fact that Terracycle is making a great product from nothing but trash — organic food waste and discarded plastic soda bottles.
I’ve written about Terracycle before, mostly to point out the lawsuit brought against them by Scotts Miracle-Gro. But today I’d like to focus on the positive, on how fantastic Terracycle really is. Today’s second video, produced by HP as part of their Mavericks series, highlights other things the company is doing that make it particularly cool. This video focuses a bit more on the technology Terracycle uses in their plant, which I’m assuming is because HP made the clip. HP was trying to be “hip” and “down with it,” using rap music and MTV-style cuts, though I’m not sure it has the desired effect. This video is louder than the first one, so turn the volume down on your computer before you watch it.

The video is titled “Turning Garbage to Gold,” which may be jumping the gun, since Terracycle isn’t yet a profitable company. Tom Szaky, however, has big plans for his products. Szaky said he wants to “take Miracle-Gro out,” with Terracycle becoming the number one selling fertilizer in the US. Maybe that’s why Terracycle is being sued by Scotts.

Too bad a company as cool as this is stuck using a PC like an HP. Still a cool idea and it really works well.
