in Companies That Get It

Today a new Guest Blogger will post to The Sustainable Scoop. Her name is Christine Bailey, and you can check out her own blog over here. I’ve asked her to post today about a company called 963 Coffee that sells coffee beans that have really, truly been fairly traded. The company offers four coffees and one hot chocolate, all of which have been sourced from people in Ethiopia, Indonesia, Central and South America, and Ghana.

Though the company isn’t certified “Fair Trade,” they go above and beyond the requirements involved with the label. They pay their producers a livable wage for their beans, they participate in micro-finance programs, and they have begun sponsoring trips for Americans to travel to their sources and see for themselves what it’s like to live for ten days in the life of a coffee producer. 963 prefers to take groups of people who know each other, because the group will take ownership of what they learn and experience, and bring those things back to their community as a whole.

Christine will tell you much more about this company, particularly because she’s got the insider info: Her husband is one of the company’s founders. 963 Coffee is a part of a larger organization called 963 Missions that organizes travel details and connects missionaries with opportunites around the world. It’s a fascinating story, and I hope you enjoy Christine’s post.
