Thanksgiving: An Internet Round-Up

As you already know, tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day in the US. I’ll be taking the day off tomorrow (as will Jenni), so here are some recipes, tips, and thoughts about Turkey Day from all over the internets.

Grist urges you to have an “organic, local, free-range” Thanksgiving.
Most of us already know this stuff, but it never hurts to reiterate the need to think about where our food comes from, especially when we’re talking about a day that focuses entirely around consuming large quantities of food. LINK

Planet Green: Adopt a turkey for $20.
A vegetarian blogger talks about the merits of “adopting” a turkey at Farm Sanctuary rather than eating one for the holiday. Is it wrong that reading this article made me hungry for a stuffed turkey with gravy? Maybe you could adopt one turkey and eat one turkey, evening out your impact on turkeys everywhere. Go Turkey Neutral! LINK

This American Life talks about our relationship with poultry.
Originally airing nine years ago, this annual show about our obsession with consuming birds makes for one thoughtful and entertaining hour. You can listen to the show on their site, or wait for a couple of days until it’s available on iTunes. LINK

Gluten-Free Girl lists helpful links for a gluten-free Thanksgiving.
She also provides some peace of mind via the lessons she’s learned by watching her husband (a professional chef) work in the kitchen every year. They say that simplicity is best; I (and my stress level) definitely agree! LINK

Bakespace has recipes for your Thanksgiving leftovers.
The recipes for leftovers are mixed in with recipes for the actual holiday. Personally, I like to chow on leftovers straight, either warmed in the oven or cold right out of the refrigerator. All that eating sure makes me lazy. LINK

Mom Go Green recommends greener baking products.
Featuring products from If You Care, this post talks about the merits of paying attention to your cooking tools and supplies as well as to the food itself. Be sure to look for the company’s Heavy-Duty foil, because their basic foil tears easily and sticks to the food you’re cooking. I haven’t tried their parchment paper yet, so you’ll have to take Mom Go Green’s word for it. LINK

Organic Bouquet offers 15% off arrangements this week.
Be a good guest and bring your host/hostess a beautiful autumn arrangement of organically-grown blooms. If you are hosting the dinner this year, wow your guests with flowers that are as responsible as they are attractive. LINK

Enjoy the holiday, I’ll see you again on the other side. I’ll resume blogging on Buy Nothing Day, the anti-shopping holiday otherwise known as Black Friday, a day that I devote entirely to watching football with Ted and consuming a steady stream of leftover mashed potatoes. Yum!

I used the If You Care parchment paper for my cookie baking last week. I liked it very much, I will definitely buy it again when I see it next. Also, if you line your baking sheets with it remember that you can reuse the same sheet over and over.
