I’m on a bar soap kick. It all started when I grew weary of searching shower gel labels to verify that they were free of SLS, parabens, and phthalates. Plus, I’ve moved past the shower puff, and this may only make sense to women, but I also like the aesthetic of a bar of soap. I like the simplicity. In keeping with my holiday scent theme, I picked up a cinnamon Zum Bar at Whole Foods, and that did it. Not only was it possibly the best cinnamon scent ever, but it did not dry out my skin. Since my skin is very parched, I thought for sure the cinnamon soap would eventually dry out my skin. I tried it again and again, and nope, no drying me out. I had to know their secret!

The key to an Indigo Wild Zum Bar is goat’s milk. They explain why it works so well on their FAQ page:

Goat’s milk is naturally ultra-moisturizing. Goat’s milk soap contains capric, caprylic, and capronic acids and natural occurring triglycerides. Otherwise known as good fats. The result is a pH level that is good for healthy human hair and skin, while commercial soap can dry out the skin to the point at which it feels taut and itchy. The oil glands are forced to counteract, overproducing oils in an attempt to rebalance the pH of the skin. The result can be oily skin, clogged pores, blackheads and yuck - pimples.

That makes sense to me. Along with goat’s milk, Indigo Wild bar soaps contain other simplistic ingredients: saponified 100% food grade olive, coconut, palm and castor oils, with herbs, pure essential oils and mineral pigments. Further details on their colorings are also described on their FAQ page: “We use ultramarines and iron oxides for our colorants. We never use FD&C colorings in any of our products.”

Indigo Wild does not disclose which essential oils are in each Zum Bar, but I’m willing to let that slide a little since the fragrances are not bothersome to mine or my husband’s health. We keep cinnamon soap in the kitchen, we’re using almond in the shower, and another favorite of ours is frankincense & myrrh. A friend confirmed that ylang ylang is heavenly as well. The other scents on my to-try list are tea tree-citrus, rooibos red tea, cedar, vanilla sugar, and clove-mint. Shoot, they have such a good selection - I’ll probably try all of their soaps. Hmm, I wonder if their doggie soap works on cats?
