Tuesday’s Tip: Save Packing Materials

With the holidays approaching, I can feel the panic beginning as I start the list-making process. We have a big family, so it takes some planning to make sure no one gets left out when the gifts get sent. I like to mail my gifts a little early, mainly because I have a (somewhat) irrational fear of their getting lost in the mail during what’s the Postal Service’s busiest time of the year. If I don’t send my gifts out by what I think is a reasonable safety window before Christmas, I usually wait until after the holidays to send things out, and then what’s the fun of that?

So I’ve been saving boxes, peanuts, bubble wrap, and newspaper for the last couple of months. My mom used to save gift wrap when I was a kid; I don’t go that far, but the principles of reusing materials was instilled in me. My thinking is, recycling is good, but reusing is better. Why send a perfectly good box to the recycling center when it could easily sustain another trip through the mail? And though I don’t advocate the use of peanuts, even the corn-based biodegradable kind, if they’ve already been used in a package I received, I don’t like to toss those, either.

Start saving packing materials now, and by Christmas you won’t have to buy any boxes to wrap gifts in. And don’t forget to get all your mailing done early!
