Okay, I realize that nobody actually makes mixTAPES anymore. But the concept is still alive and well. I can personally attest to that, since I’m kind of addicted to making mix CDs for friends and acquaintances. And while I love the idea of a mix CD as a sign of love or as a promo, I can;t deny that it’s a wasteful endeavor. Jewel cases, paper, ink, the CDs themselves… though small in size, the mix CD in its entirety is one day bound for the landfill. CDs just don’t last, so the creation of one is an unsustainable endeavor that I’m particularly guilty of.
So I’m excited about Muxtape, an online mixtape-sharing service that’s free. You upload your songs, create a playlist, and share it with people. It’s still a little hazy to me what the laws are about which songs you can share. Can you upload songs from iTunes? Other download services? What about ripped songs from physical CDs? The rules aren’t all that clear on Muxtape.com, which makes me wonder how long the service has until record companies come down on it.
For now, anyway, Muxtape is kind of like Flickr for music. You upload your music and organize it using the site’s simple interface. Each user can only make one mixtape, and you can’t upload multiple songs from the same artist. But even with these constrictions, I’m finding that it’s fun to use. Who needs more than one song per artist, anyway? Wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of a mixtape?
I’ve made a Muxtape to share with you guys, you can listen to it at kerryrobb.muxtape.com. I haven’t had a lot of time to put into it, so I just uploaded some songs I’m listening to at the moment. I hope that some of you create Muxtapes and share them with me, this could be fun!*
*UPDATE: I’m having trouble playing most of the songs on my list, and Muxtape crashed Safari. Firefox isn’t having much more luck. So, maybe Muxtape isn’t so fun?
**UPDATE: I fixed it!
