Tuesday’s Tip: Drink From the Tap

April 29th, 2008 · 8 Comments

Yeah, we all know that drinking water bottled in plastic is bad. Sometimes it’s unavoidable, like when you’re traveling (just remember to recycle the bottle). But it’s best not to make a habit of it. We use a Brita pitcher container in our house, which mostly just makes the water taste better. And though we still have to dispose of the filters, we don’t go through them very often, and I still think it’s less waste than plastic bottles.

Still, it’s best to drink straight from the tap, if that’s a possibility where you live. If you own your home, you can install a filtration system that filters the water for your entire house. I think this is the best option, though not everybody can swing it. So check with your city of residence to see what they allow in (or add to) the water, and if everything looks good, drink away. The fewer plastic bottles we consume, the better it is for us and the planet.

I would drink from the tap here in Dallas if it didn’t taste like the bottom of a pond! Sick! Oh, how I long for the New Jersey water. Tasted like a fresh spring straight from the tap. I didn’t even know what a water filter was growing up.

Careful with the Brita ptichers - they’re polycarbonate and contain bisphenol-A, the same chemical that’s caused so much controversy in baby bottles and Nalgene containers.

According to this website, Brita pitchers are NOT made of the same materials as Nalgene bottles and are considered to be safe.

BD and niki: Thanks, I’ll check out the truth behind Brita filters, and I’ll post about it once I get the facts.

I live in Steamboat Springs, CO and am fortunate enough to be able to drink out of the tap. Although there are days where the smell of chlorine coming from it is pretty obvious. Not sure how harmful that is for me considering the chemicals in bottled water.

We couldn’t do the whole house, but we did install a filtration system under the kitchen sink - for drinking water, and cooking.

I work with Edelman on behalf of Brita. I want to assure you that Brita pitchers do not contain bisphenol A (BPA). In fact, the main body of Brita pitchers are not made with polycarbonate, but with another type of plastic that does not contain BPA.

If you have further questions about Brita products, please visit http://www.brita.com or call Brita at 1-800-24-BRITA.

Hey sis! I’m glad you posted this - I recall our brief convo about tap water when I was visiting you last. I only drink out of the tap, if only for the fact that I’m rather lazy, hate spending over TWO DOLLARS on an 8oz. bottle of liquid found everywhere on earth, and luckily up here the water tastes amazing (yay, rain).
