Yesterday we posted about our skin care routines, and many of you shared yours as well. So today, Jenni and I decided to ‘fess up to which beauty products we carry in our makeup bags. Some of them are fairly clean, and some of them are downright dirty. It’s probably safe to say that cosmetics are the final frontier for good organic products, and there are several great ones on the market today from which we can choose. But until we get to do more research and testing, here’s what we’re using.
CONCEALER
KERRY: Mineral Fusion Concealer Duo in Neutral.
JENNI: Maybelline Cover Stick in fair.
FOUNDATION
KERRY: None.
JENNI: Almay Line-Smoothing compact makeup in ivory.
POWDER
KERRY: Jane Iredale Pressed Minerals SPF 20 in Neutral. I apply it with the company’s Handi brush.
JENNI: Dr. Hauschka translucent loose powder. This stuff is pricey, but it works perfectly and smells heavenly.
EYE SHADOW/LINER?
KERRY: I don’t use shadow, but for special occasions I use M.A.C.’s Eyeliner Pencil in Ebony. I know I should find a cleaner version, but I wore this stuff at my wedding, and even though I cried during the entire ceremony, it didn’t run. It’s amazing, though it makes me wonder what’s in it.
JENNI: N/A.
MASCARA
KERRY: I use MAX Factor’s 2000 Calorie Mascara in Rich Black (the curved brush version). However, I keep trying to make Suki’s Rich Pigment mascara in Black Velvet to work for me, but I can’t seem to keep it from smearing under my eyes after just a couple of hours of wear.
JENNI: Maybelline Great Lash in brown/black (curved brush). However, I want to know if anyone has found a good, truly natural mascara? [Hey, I hear that Glo Minerals' GloVolumizing mascara is pretty good. -Kerry]
CHEEKS
KERRY: I’m a long-time fan of Benefit’s Benetint cheek stain. I’ve confessed my unholy love for this product before.
JENNI: I don’t use blush, but I really, really ought to. Suggestions?
LIP COLOR/BALM
KERRY: I live and die for Weleda’s Everon lip balm. I also like the lip balms from Hugo Naturals.
JENNI: My typical lip color is Alba TerraTints in blaze, but I also use Hemp Organics and PeaceKeeper lipsticks, too. As for lip balm, I’ve got an impressive collection, but my favorites are Weleda Everon lip balm and Pangea Organics in Egyptian Fennel w/grapefruit & orange.
FRAGRANCE
KERRY: I don’t typically use perfumes or fragrances, but if I did, I’d use Aubrey Organics Spring Floral perfume.
JENNI: For fragrance, Tropical Traditions Baby Silk moisturizing lotion is just about perfect, but I sometimes dab on a little amber oil or Indigo Wild frankincense & myrrh roll-on perfume. Or, Desert Essence Organics vanilla chai lotion is amazing as well.
ANYTHING ELSE?
KERRY: I invested some dough in a Shu Uemura eyelash curler and some good Tweezerman slant tweezers a couple of years ago, and I couldn’t be happier. Also, here’s a tip: after applying mascara, I use a toothbrush (purchased for this purpose only) to separate my lashes. It works wonders.
JENNI: The Indigo Wild Zum Lab pimple stick WORKS. Oil blotting papers rule - either by Clean & Clear or Burt’s Bees, although I don’t think Burt’s makes ‘em anymore.

Oh, goodie! I love makeup.
Concealer: I love Arbonne concealer. It’s kind of a pain to order all the time though so I might switch to Bare Minerals soon.
Foundation: LOVE Bare Minerals foundation - it’s actually the mineral powder but it covers so well and gives a really natural finish.
Powder: n/a
Eyeshadow/liner: I love eye stuff! I have several shadow colors from Aveda that I really like. They have a slight shimmer and last really long. I also just bought a Bare Minerals shadow that is perfect. Great quality and lots of colors to choose from. I love eyeshadow like Jenni loves lip balm!
Liner: Aveda eye pencil, and I also love Laura Mercier’s bronze eye pencil. I was excited about the Sally Hansen Natural Beauty collection inspired by Carmindy, but the liquid eyeliner made my eyes itch like crazy! And I’m NEVER allergic to cosmetics.
Mascara: Same as Jenni, Maybelline Great Lash. It’s just the best. I heard that mascara is one of the most toxic beauty supplies though. I might have to try that GloMinerals.
Cheeks: Bare Minerals in Golden Gate. I also love the Aveda blush that has 3 colors in one.
Lips: Avalon Organics Vitamin C lip balm is the BEST. Tastes like a creamsicle. My favorite lip gloss of all time is Origins in Beaming Berry. I also like the Sally Hansen Natural Beauty lip gloss that I just got in a peachy color.
Fragrance: Sadly, I still am addicted to Victoria’s Secret Amber Romance, but I’m almost out of it. I like your recommendations on fragrance.
Anything else: I agree with Kerry, the Shu Uemura eyelash curler is one of the best purchases you can make. And a good pair of Tweezermans. The tweezers basically have a lifetime guarantee! Many of us have heard how I used to heat my eyelash curler with my blowdryer until I got the Shu Uemura!
Love Desert Essence Coconut Body Lotion.

Thanks for all the info., Stine. I really need to get into eye makeup, too - I like the sound of Aveda. Does their eye makeup smell as good as their other products??

Yeah! The fun continues
Pure makeup is hard to find, but you can you just have to be an avid label-reader. This is what I’m using right now:
Concealer: NVEY ECO ‘Erase’ concealer (The BEST concealer I’ve found thus far…stays on all day…and it’s certified organic…awesome!)
Foundation: SukiColor Tinted Active Moisturizer SPF (I never used to wear foundation, but this is really a moisturizer with color. Ever since I tried it, I can’t stop…feels amazing, heals blemishes and gives you a nice, even toned fresh face) LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this!
Powder: Nope. I prefer a fresh glowing face to matte.
Eye Shadow: SukiColor Triple Cream Eye Definer in Amber & NVEY ECO 153
Cheeks: SukiColor Lip & Cheek stain (AMAZING & I love it!)
Lip Color/Balm: I alternate between Perfect Organics Lip Shimmer & SukiColor Lip/Cheek stain (Kerri & Jenni, I’m expecting some Everon lip balm to arrive anyday…reading that you love it makes me anxious to try it out!)

Unfortunately, I use almost all conventional products. I haven’t worked up to my cosmetics yet in the grand switcheroo to healthier products. However, I do use:
-Honeybee Gardens mascara, which flakes a tad but I still love it, and
-Burt’s Bees blemish roll-on treatment, which I can honestly say really works, especially overnight.
I do also buy various lip balms from my local natural food store, but I can’t keep them all straight. I had been using Avon until I looked it up on Skin Deep. Holy cow!

I’m not big on cosmetics but I do use the occasional mascara and lip/shimmer creams from
Miessence.
also lose mineral powders if I want foundation or bronzer.
